The Healthy Body

Living is like a martial art. It must achieve a balance of mind, body and spirit.

A few years have passed since the Atkin's low carb diet. Today, the medical community and most dieticians are pushing for a more balanced regimen relying on size of portion and lower glycemic index. In other words, control how much you eat and watch the type of carbs you eat. Carbs are no longer a dirty word. But the health community and the food industry are finally waking up to the problems in the American diet: large portions, processed carbs with no health value, too little fiber, and too much sugar and salt. To this, I add that you must relish your food: choose color, flavor, spices, and freshness to make each meal not an act of stuffing food in your face, but a time to savor the moment. I am working toward a more Mediterranean diet with a balance of meat and fish, olive oil, whole grains and legumes, more green vegetables, and fruit. I love a great glass of beer or wine. And I still recommend a good multi-vitamin. Unless you are young, physically and athletically active, with no medical problems, eating only fresh food (farmer market regionally grown produce) heavy on fiber, a balance of fresh vegetables and fruit with a lighter portion of meat and fish, you are probably not getting all the vitamins and minerals you need.

Remember arthritis and heart disease. I honestly believe that daily supplements of Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfates have been beneficial to my training and allowed both better fluid movement and health of my joints. As I have crossed the fifty barrier, I also take an ecoteric aspirin each day. Live long and prosper.
